Product Description
ShanStar™ Concord Grape, a purified extract of concord grapes, contains high levels of bioflavonoids including 0.84 mg/g resveratrol. This is high when compared to the quantity of resveratrol in 1 liter of wine, which ranges from 0.01 to 8 mg per liter depending on the type, year and origin of the wine. All concord grapes used in the manufacturing of ShanStar™ Concord Grape are grown in the Great Lakes Region. A patented process selectively extracts the bioflavonoids from the grape juice and skins while leaving behind unwanted sugars and acids. The standard form of the ingredient is a powder consisting of purified concentrate plus a USP grade disintegrant.
Applications
ShanStar™ Concord Grape offers specific advantages as an additive in products such as:
- dietary supplements
- low calorie dietary supplements
- medical foods and beverages
- foods for special dietary use
- cosmetics
Background
The health benefits of grape juice and resveratrol are well documented1-4. Resveratrol is a bioflavonoid found in the skin and juice of a number of grape varieties. This compound acts as a natural anti-fungal for the grape itself. It is hypothesized that resveratrol is in higher concentration in grape varieties grown in humid climes such as New York and France where fungi flourish5. Its chemical structure makes it a good anti-oxidant and some reported human health benefits are anti-platelet aggregation, anti-cholesterol and support for healthy cardiac function. The resveratrol in red wine has been noted to be one of the primary factors contributing to “The French Paradox”. This is the phenomenon of lower incidence of heart disease among the people living in France.
Scientific Data
Since bioactivity is what is important to the customer, ShanStar Biotech specifies all its products in terms of activity levels and the presence of key compounds such as resveratrol in the case of ShanStar™ Concord Grape. ShanStar™ is one of few brands that is tested in this way. All ShanStar™ products are guaranteed with minimum levels of key activities and/or select compounds5.
Bioactivity versus the number of pills required per day
When taking a dietary supplement, users want to maximize the amount of desired bioactivity per pill thereby reducing the number of pills taken per day for a desired effect. ShanStar™ Concord Grape contains ~ 20 times more anti-oxidant activity per gram than the Ocean Spray brand. This means 50 mg of ShanStar™ Concord Grape is equivalent to 1000 mg of Ocean Spray. How many pills would your customers have to take per day if they want the benefits of grape juice? Make it 1 pill and give them ShanStar™ Concord Grape.
